Pain Managment and Control

It may seem unusual to mention this as a ‘service’ we offer but the field has progressed so much in the last few years it bears mentioning.

It used to be that the choice of anesthetic drugs for animals was limited but today there are a number of choices and combinations available. Each animal is assessed before surgery with a pre-anesthetic physical examination, blood work and a thorough review of their past medical history. Based on these factors and their age an appropriate combination of sedatives and anesthetics is selected.

Our patients are monitored closely during surgery. A technician monitors blood pressure, oxygen levels, heart rate and respiratory rate and pattern. All of our patients receive intravenous fluids during surgery.

Similarly, the art of pain control has improved immeasurably over the last few years. All of our staff is trained to recognize any discomfort in our patients. Pain relief medication is administered if and when it is needed.
