Scott McRobbie: Practice Manager

Our Practice Manager, Scott, joined the team at AAH in 2009. He is a University of Toronto graduate with a background in finance, sales and inventory maintenance.  He works hard to ensure that the Animal Health Care Team at our animal hospital is well-supported and has the supplies and equipment necessary to provide prompt and high-quality care.  He also makes sure that many of the "behind the scenes" jobs are completed effectively so that we can seamlessly care for you and your pets. We are all very grateful that one of his hobbies is working with computers!  He also helped to design and supervised the renovation of the Ajax Animal Rehabilitation and Fitness Centre next door including the huge job of importing and installing our UnderWater Treadmill!

Scott is married to Dr. Karyn Jones and when they are not at the animal hospital they can be found spending time with their amazing teenager, Wyatt. Their friends and family smile as they watch the ongoing project "Operation: Teach Wyatt Stuff".  Scott and Wyatt both train in Kyokushin Karate at the same dojo and the whole family shares a love for music and trying new local food spots. Their house is made a home by the addition of their pets. Zelda the Miniature Long-haired Dachshund makes everyone smile with her affectionate and playful manner.  Peggy, Ilene & Trynity are all three-legged rescue cats who compete for time on Scott's lap (though Peggy often wins and the younger ones curl up with Dr Karyn or Wyatt).

Karen S: Animal Health Technician

Karen has worked at the Ajax Animal Hospital since she was a student at Ajax High School. She started as a part time veterinary assistant and receptionist and became an Animal Health Technician because of her love for pets. She is currently working with us part-time as she has a busy family with four children. Alexander, Victoria and the twins, Catharine and Elizabeth, are all in post-secondary eduction now. She attended the University of Toronto where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Her studies then took her to the King City campus of Seneca college for 2 years where she graduated as an AHT.  Karen is certified and enjoys providing Therapeutic Laser Treatments for our patients.

In addition to looking after her family, Karen shares her home with her husband Andrew, their gorgeous young Golden Retriever, Finn, and three handsome cats, MacDuff (AAH adoptee), Rikki (who was brought home from the barn by her children) and Sherman, who is a lucky, black long-haired cat. She also has a horse named Pepper who she visits and rides daily at Audley Stables.

In her spare time, Karen enjoys attending and cheering at many horse-shows with her daughters. Personally, she enjoys travel and is a bit of a foodie.  She can also be found working out, horseback riding, spending time with her family and reading.

Barb Van Beek is a warm and smiling member of our front office team.  She is teased by other staff members because with her friendly English accent, it sounds as though she introduces herself as "Bob" when she answers the phone!  An experience veterinary receptionist, she is very good at explaining treatments and medications to clients and is effective in helping people arrange for their pet's care. In fact, you might even see her at the Animal Emergency Clinic of Durham Region where she works occasionally.

Barb flew across the pond many years ago to work as a nanny for one of the doctors. After her childcare duties were finished, Barb took a job at the clinic as one of our receptionists. Barb has been part of our team for over 25 years, only taking time off in the middle to raise her 2 sons, Marc and Ryan, who are now all grown up.

When not at the clinic, Barb enjoys time with her partner Steve and they are both foodies who love trying new types of cuisine.  She is outdoorsy and likes going to the cottage and reading good books.

Melissa:  Veterinary Assistant

Melissa came on board with us in September of  2018 as a member of the Veterinary Assistant team.  We were happy she became a part of the team after her experiences here as a co-op Student from the Animal Care Attendant program at Durham College during the winter and spring of that year.

Monitoring for patient comfort, and providing friendly and caring assistance to our veterinarians and technicians can keep her pretty busy but she is always watching for pets who are nervous and need a little extra TLC to feel comfortable when they come into the hospital.

Deep compassion and love for animals has lead Melissa and her husband Mike to be Foster volunteers for Dog Rescue. Their home can be quite full as a result.  Her special furry family members are Beans & Rice, both beautiful Boxers. She can also tell you about being a big snake owner if you would like to know!
