Rehabilitation Services

Assessments and treatments to help your pet recover from injuries.

Veterinarians certified in animal rehabilitation provide leadership to a rehabilitative team that can consist of other veterinary professionals (physical therapists, technicians and rehabilitation therapists). They will work closely with your pet's primary care and specialty veterinarians. Our rehab-certified veterinarian can prescribe pain medications if needed and may offer therapies such as spinal manipulative therapy. They will also curate a treatment program that may include additional therapies specifically designed to meet your pet's needs. This multimodal approach provides greater opportunity for a successful outcome. We will work with you to keep your pet fit for life. Please give us a call at 905-683-6430 to schedule a rehabilitation consultation.

What is rehabilitation?

Physical rehabilitation is the diagnosis and management of patients with painful or functionally limiting conditions - particularly those with injury or illness related to the neurologic and musculoskeletal systems. The goal of rehabilitation is to achieve the highest level of function, independence and quality of life possible for the patient.

What does the Rehabilitation Assessment appointment cover?

This one-hour appointment will include the following:

  • a history consultation
  • stance and weight-bearing analysis
  • gait evaluation (walking and trotting if able)
  • strength testing

A full manual assessment of your pet's muscles, joints, spine, tendons and ligaments will be performed to highlight areas of injury and pain, decreased range of motion and muscle atrophy. Based on the findings, a comprehensive and detailed treatment and exercise program will be devised and shared with you.

We will work with you to achieve success and help keep your pet fit for life!

What rehabilitation therapies do you offer?

Dr. Jones is our certified canine rehabilitation therapist (CCRT) with plenty of experience providing rehabilitation assessments and treatments. Based on your pet's fitness, health and lifestyle we can provide the following procedures:

  1. Manual therapy - performed by the CCRT, it can include Joint Mobilizations, Soft Tissue Massage, Therapeutic Stretching, Passive Range of Motion Exercises and Neurological stimulation treatments.
  2. Hydrotherapy -  the Underwater Treadmill (UTW) is a unique, pain-relieving, supportive and stimulating way to use warmth, resistance and buoyancy to improve muscle injury or strengthen and tone skeletal muscles. UWT training can also be used for weight loss and as a part of Sport and Working Dog conditioning programs.
  3. Therapeutic Laser - is an innovative way to assist and speed tissue healing and decrease swelling and inflammation in injured muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints.
  4. Therapeutic exercise - an important part of recovery, rehabilitation and injury prevention.  Stretching and Conditioning appointments including Active Range of Motion exercises, Specific Muscle Strengthening, Core Muscle Conditioning, Stabilizer Work and Patterning and Proprioception activities can be booked with Chris, our Registered Veterinary Technician and Certified Canine Rehabilitation Assistant.
  5. Electrical stimulation therapy - TENS and NMES units are used to help control and treat pain from muscles, bones and joints.
