What pocket pets do you see at your hospital?

A pocket pet refers to a small animal that could easily fit inside your pocket, lap or the palm of your hands. At our hospital we provide medical care to several pocket pets including:

  1. Guinea Pigs
  2. Ferrets
  3. Gerbils
  4. Hamster
  5. Chinchilla
  6. Rat
  7. Mice

What should I know before I get a pocket pet?

One of the first things you need to know before getting these pets is that they require special care just like cats or dogs. Pocket pets should see a veterinarian once or twice a year depending on their health status. Your tiny companion will be susceptible to parasites and diseases like worms, mites, rabies, fleas, dental and respiratory issues. With your veterinarian, you can help protect your pet from these issues and get them treatment if necessary. You should also know the signs of illness in your pet. Here are a few:

  1. Change in the colour of their urine
  2. Diarrhea
  3. More quiet than usual
  4. Loss of appetite
  5. Abnormal behaviour
  6. Lumps and sores
