Diagnostic Services for Pets

Contact our team to schedule your pet's next diagnostic appointment.

At the Ajax Animal Hospital, we are proud to offer ultrasound and X-rays on site for our patients. With these diagnostic tools, we get real-time images or snapshots of your pet's internal system and organs. Ultrasound and X-rays are both pain-free and non-invasive procedures that are invaluable when trying to diagnose patients or monitor their health. What are ultrasounds?

Ultrasounds use sound waves to examine your pet's internal organs. The process is completely pain-free and doesn't usually require anesthesia unless your pet is having a biopsy. Several of our veterinarians have taken extensive training to perform ultrasounds and interpret the findings. Ultrasounds can identify pregnancies, abscesses, tumours, cysts and fluid. We also recommend ultrasounds to examine important organs like liver, kidney, heart and gallbladder.

What can X-rays detect?

During X-ray scans, a small amount of radiation is used to generate images. X-rays use electrons that will either bounce off or be absorbed by dense areas inside your pet like bones. For best results, pets need to remain still so your veterinarian may sedate them. We use X-rays to detect tumours, fractures, broken bones, and swallowed objects. This tool can also be used to identify arthritis, gallstones, spinal cord disease and periodontal disease.

Why would my pet need both an ultrasound and an X-ray?

It may seem that these tools produce the same results but we have found they compliment each other. Ultrasound permits more detailed study of internal organs. For example the liver may look enlarged on an X-ray and the ultrasound may indicate what portion is actually enlarged and how dense the enlarged portion is.

Do you offer Tonometry?

We have the ability to test your dog or cat's eyes for excess pressure easily and safely using our TONOPEN. This test allows us to diagnose glaucoma and eye infections that could cause blindness if not detected and treated early.
